USCG – TWIC update for mariners
The US Coast Guard issued an update reminding US mariners that the deadline for credentialed mariners to have a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) is April 15, 2009. Failure to obtain and hold a TWIC may result in suspension or revocation of the individual’s mariner credentials. (8/6/08).

USCG – medical and physical evaluation guidelines
The US Coast Guard issued a notice announcing the availability of the Navigation and Vessel Inspection Circular (NVIC 4-08) providing non-binding medical and physical evaluation guidelines for US merchant mariner credentials. For some bureaucratic reason (which I probably would not fully credit even if it were explained to me), the notice states that the guidelines do not come into effect until October 29. 73 Fed. Reg. 56600 (September 29, 2008).
